Calabria IGP Rosato

Come lavora

Lidhja me Arbërinë sot

Rizzo Winery

Three Generations of Passion for Wine in the Heart of Arbëria

Where it all began

At the foot of Mount Pollino, among vineyards, nature and Arbëresh traditions

Rizzo Winery was founded in Frascineto, a small Arbëresh village in Calabria, at the foot of the majestic Mount Pollino. Here, viticulture is deeply connected to family history, the landscape and local traditions.

Located within the Pollino National Park area, the winery is surrounded by a natural environment of mountains, hills and vineyards. The climate is influenced by both the mountains and breezes from the Ionian Sea, contributing to the distinctive characteristics of the grapes grown here.

In this landscape, the Rizzo family has carried on a winemaking tradition for over a century, maintaining a strong connection to its land.

The family

Three generations united by a love for the land and wine

The story of Rizzo Winery is, above all, a family story, built on hard work, sacrifice and passion passed down from generation to generation.

It all began in 1920 with Francesco Rizzo, grandfather of the current young winemaker, who started the family's winemaking activity in Frascineto, establishing a tradition that would continue over time.

In 1998, his son, Gennaro Rizzo, decided to revive viticulture, focusing on the recovery and promotion of native grape varieties grown on the family's land.

Today, the young Francesco Rizzo, Gennaro's son, carries this legacy forward.

After completing his university studies and earning a master's degree from the University of Bologna, Francesco decided to return to his hometown to dedicate himself to the family business.

A choice reflecting his desire to build his future in the land where his family's roots lie.

The story

From 1920 to today, a tradition looking towards the future

Rizzo Winery traces its origins to 1920, when Francesco Rizzo began producing wine in Frascineto.

Over the years, knowledge of the land and cultivation techniques has been passed down within the family, preserving an agricultural tradition deeply connected to the local territory.

An important turning point came in 1998, when Gennaro Rizzo decided to place viticulture once again at the heart of the family business, recovering ancient native grape varieties and enhancing the characteristics of the family's vineyards.

With the arrival of the third generation, represented by the young Francesco, the winery began a new chapter, bringing together the experience of the past and a more contemporary vision of winemaking.

The goal remains to produce wines capable of expressing the identity of the territory while preserving the connection to the family's history.

How they work

Native grape varieties, hand harvesting and a commitment to quality

Rizzo Winery covers a total area of 20 hectares, of which approximately 15 hectares are dedicated to vineyards, divided into four plots located in different parts of the territory.

Production focuses on ancient and native grape varieties, including Pecorello, Magliocco Canino, Greco Nero and Montonico Pinto, the latter being particularly rare.

Cultivation follows an approach that respects the characteristics of each grape variety and the natural conditions of the land.

The grapes are harvested strictly by hand, carefully selecting the bunches directly from the vines to preserve their quality and enhance their characteristics.

Alongside traditional production, Francesco has developed a small range of bottled wines, reflecting a journey that combines family experience with new perspectives.

The winery offers a selection of seven numbered, limited-edition wine labels, created to tell the story of three generations of work, passion and dedication through wine.

The connection with Arbëria today

Staying, returning and celebrating one's roots

Rizzo Winery is located in Frascineto, one of Calabria's Arbëresh villages, where the language, traditions and collective memory of communities of Albanian origin remain an essential part of local identity.

Among the most representative expressions of this cultural heritage are the Vallje, traditional Arbëresh dances that bring the village to life during the Easter period, preserving the community's connection to its history.

The story of the Rizzo family, connected to the land and viticulture for three generations, is deeply rooted in this cultural environment.

Francesco's decision to return to Frascineto after completing his university studies is an example of how young people can contribute to the future of small villages by continuing family activities and enhancing local resources.

Through the recovery of native grape varieties, careful vineyard management and a production philosophy that combines tradition and innovation, Cantina Rizzo contributes to preserving the agricultural heritage of the territory.

A story born from the land, spanning three generations and continuing thanks to a young winemaker's decision to return to his roots.
